I Am Second...

I wrote briefly last week, about Barron Batch and what get's him through his practices, games and life. For those of you that checked out his blog you probably found out a lot more about him, and if you didn't well let me catch you up.

Barron grew up in Midland Tx, where football is life. After a pretty outstanding football career at Midland High and being recruited by some pretty big named schools. Baron chose Texas Tech! If you've followed Baron you know his story and if you haven't this video is a small insight into Barron Batch.

Happy Birthday

Let me start this blog off by saying Happy 235th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps.

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the
cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest
morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the
United States Marine Corps!" ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

And now for my next Birthday wish...

I met Heath Sophomore year in High School, after a football practice. I was on one side of the locker room which was divided by a set of lockers and Heath was on the other end. I had a song stuck in my head from the "Set It Off" soundtrack. Now I won't reveal which song it was, but I will say, its a song for Grown Folk!

I was singing the song in my head and humming the tune out loud but for the life of me I could not remember the second verse of the song. It was starting to drive me crazy, so I started asking the guys next to me if they knew the second verse to this song. No one even knew what song I was talking about. The days of going home and looking up lyrics on google or lyrics.com wasn't even a thought in my mind.. so I was getting pretty desperate. I couldn't wait to get home to ask my sister if she could remember the second verse. If I don't know a movie quote, an actor or what movie they played in she's usually my life line.

Just when I was giving up hope on finding out the second verse, out from behind the lockers a tall, skinny, white kid (always had to be racial) peeks his head around and starts to sing the lyrics to the song. Now I can't tell you what shocked me more, that I finally started to remember the lyrics or that this guy who would later go on to be my best friend was the one who knew the lyrics. Nothing about Heath said to me I listen to "Rap" or "R&B." To my surprise not only did he listen to the same kind of music as me, but he could also rap the lyrics to just about every Bone Thugs n' Harmony song there was, and actually KNEW the lyrics. Now that, was pretty amazing in itself.

Now, I could write an entire book about how close we became, about how he became more than just my best friend and more of my brother, about how I see his Parents, his sister and mamo like my parents, my sister and my mamo. How, he was the only person that seemed to have the words so that life made sense again. But I won't. Because today is not about me. Today is about Heath and his story. Today is the day I will tell stories of the things we did, the conversations we had and the things we went through. Today is the day I will always talk about, the man that Heath was and of the Man I'm becoming because of Heath. Until our next conversation stew... one love.

Good or Great?

Today's post has been long overdue for me. Not only because I haven't posted in a few days but also because after a few conversations that I've had, and a few blogs that I've read have made me ask myself a question. “Do you wanna be good, or do you wanna be great?”

Now, as much as I would like to take credit for coming up with this question all by myself I can't. Just wouldn't be fair. I have my girlfriend to thank for going all "Inception" on me and planting this in my head. She stumbled upon the blog of Barron Batch and had me read one of his posts and it was pretty much "down/up hill for me" from then on out. The "down/up hill" quote is a reference to the movie Due Date, which by the way I though was pretty hilarious.

As for the blog I read, Barron wrote that his coach always asks him “Do you wanna be good, or do you wanna be great?” This question can be a pretty easy question to answer if you just answer right off the top of your head... Great Please. You're not ordering a #3 at McDonalds people, put some thought into it. Realize that with great comes a price to pay. With asking for greatness know that its not going to just be handed out. It's something that has to be WORKED for. I think a lot of people forget about this part. I know I DO! I have always been the "Uncle Rico" kind of guy. "Man if coach would have put me in we would have won state". YEAH RIGHT! That's why coach didn't put you in because you showed no determination, no commitment, no HEART! It requires you to work for it. I know I've heard this saying at least a thousand times. "if it was easy, everyone would do it".

Now I'm mainly venting at myself here but also at everyone who thinks that a sub 3 minute Fran time just comes easy to those people who have a sub 3 minute Fran time. We don't normally get to see all of the commitment and work that goes into this type of effort. The dialed in diet, the countless times attempting the workout fran, the ripped hands or the other workouts that also beat people down in their efforts to break a sub 3min. But when the sub 3min time is hit, guess what... one goal checked off of the list. That's part of what it takes to be great. The commitment and the never back down or quit mentality.

So my pledge to myself. no excuses, work hard and no matter what the voice in my head says don't quit. Anyone can be good.. good is effortless. Good is relying on athletic ability to get you through the workouts. To be great requires effort! To be great requires dedication, determination and not accepting the excuses that you make up in your head. Being great not only gets you through the workouts, but gets you the fastest times or the most rounds or has people say "they finished in what time....how?" You know, the conversation that takes place after a workout that has just beat you down and you feel like you gave it your all but realized that someone else finished the workout in half your time. Or got double your rounds. Yeah, to me that's great. That's one of my goals.

Most Interesting Man

So.... long gone are the days when my flip cam was set up and video's were being recorded for the 3dub to get a peek into my life, and what CrossFit Central was up to. For those of you that are asking yourself the "3 what?" The 3dub stands for the World Wide Web.

Anywho, back to the blog purpose. The flip cam was returned back to the CC Batcave and I'm left with "old school" blogging. Which means that I now have to captivate you guys with my quick whit, awesome pic finding skills and JT facts alone. You no longer get to see what shirt is being displayed for the day. If you know me, I'm pretty much a t-shirt junkie and believe it or not that's one of the highlights of my day. So today I have for you a little inspiration from one of my favorite modern day characters. I'd like to introduce to you the... (drum roll please)

"the most interesting man in the world"

Why "The most interesting man in the world" you ask. Because for some reason Lance Cantu decided that we should all grow out our beards for the month of November and this guy is my inspiration.

Now that I've given you something to giggle about for Monday. I'd like to say big congrats to all the peeps that showed up or participated in the Butcher Challenge this past Saturday. I'll will tell you guys to stay tuned to the Central website for pics and video of the challenge. Hope you guys have a great Monday. Stay tuned...

When you say "nobody is perfect", Jeremy Thiel takes this as a personal insult.
